From Scenic Roads to Screaming Engines – The Nürburgring-Experience

Known as the “Green Hell,” the Nürburgring is one of the most challenging and thrilling circuits in the world. It’s a mecca for motorsport enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of high-speed straights, technical corners, and breathtaking scenery. In this post, I’ll share my experience, tips, and everything you need to know to make the most of your own Nürburgring adventure.

Getting There

The Nürburgring is nestled in the beautiful Eifel in western Germany. We chose to drive to the Nürburgring, which allowed us to fully enjoy the scenic roads and picturesque countryside leading up to the track. However, if you prefer to fly, Cologne Bonn Airport is a convenient choice, about a 90-minute drive away, while Frankfurt Airport is roughly 2 hours from the track.

Where to Stay

For the full Nürburgring experience, staying close to the track is essential. If you’re traveling in a group, the Lindner Ferienpark Nürburgring is a fantastic choice, offering spacious cottages and excellent amenities for a more social atmosphere. In the evenings, the atmosphere in this small village feels straight out of Fast and Furious, with incredible cars parked all around, creating a true motorsport vibe. For solo travelers or couples, I recommend the Ring-Apartment – a modern, comfortable option just minutes from the track, perfect for those who want a cozy, private stay.

Car Rental

When it comes to renting a car for the Nürburgring, I highly recommend Ringfreaks. They offer a fantastic selection of track-prepped cars at great prices, making it easier to find the perfect ride for your Nürburgring adventure.

Where to Eat

Before hitting the track, a hearty breakfast is a must. I highly recommend Devil’s Diner, located right at the entrance to the tourist drives. Their pancakes are particularly amazing and a perfect way to fuel up for a day on the Nordschleife.

Experiencing the Track

For first-timers, I’d recommend taking a few laps on a guided tour to get a feel for the infamous corners like Karussell, Flugplatz, and the notorious Brünnchen.

If you ever feel like taking a break from driving, I highly recommend heading to the Nordschleife to watch the action up close. Some of the best spectator spots include Brünnchen, Pflanzgarten, Wippermann, and Hatzenbach. These sections offer thrilling views of the track, where you can really appreciate the speed, sound, and sheer intensity of the cars as they push through the corners.

Tips for a Successful Nürburgring Trip

  • Plan Ahead: Check the track schedule in advance, as it can be closed for private events, race events or weather conditions.
  • Stay Safe: Respect the track and your limits. The Nürburgring is unforgiving, and crashes are not uncommon.
  • Capture the Moment: Don’t forget to set up a GoPro or rent an onboard camera to capture your laps.
  • Meet the Community: The Nürburgring attracts passionate car enthusiasts from all over the world, making the parking lots as interesting as the track itself.
  • Pack for All Weather: Make sure to bring clothing for every possible weather condition. The typical Eifel weather can be unpredictable, ranging from bone-chilling cold to intense heat, so be prepared for anything.

Beyond the Track

While the Nürburgring is the main attraction, don’t miss out on the surrounding Eifel region. Charming villages, medieval castles, and breathtaking hiking trails are all within a short drive.

Final Thoughts

Driving the Nürburgring is a bucket-list experience for any motorsport fan. It pushes your limits, tests your nerve, and leaves you with a lifetime of memories. Whether you’re a seasoned racer or a curious road-tripper, the Green Hell has something for everyone.
